dc.description.abstractSonars used to count migrating salmon in the Pacific Northwest must operate in a complicated and variable acoustic environment. This paper discusses the acoustic properties which affect the performance of salmon enumeration methods. The methods used must be able to take into account variable site geometry and river bed characteristics. From this information, a background and target reverberation levels can be calculated. Using this information, guidelines for sonar site selection and configuration can be established.en_US
