Abstract
This research investigated the capabilities of the Yellow River
Sweetwater Creek Water Reclamation Facility in Gwinnett County, GA.
to remove phosphorus biologically. Phosphorus levels and removal
locations were analyzed in plant operational units (sampling
events) , while in reactor experiments (pilot studies) , waste was
subjected to various conditions to promote biological phosphorus
release and uptake. Analysis of plant conditions at the time of
experimentation indicates that one-half of the plant phosphorus
removal is accomplished biologically through incorporation of
phosphorus in microbial cells during growth. It does not appear,
however, that enhanced biological phosphorus removal (BPR) is
possible due to wastestream characteristics and/or microbial population. It was noted that the basic anaerobic-aerobic sequence associated with enhanced BPR appears to be occurring with the secondary clarifier sludge blanket and return to compartment A of the nitrification basin.
