Abstract
Oman emerged from political isolation and economic backwardness on the accession of sultan Qaboos bin Said in July 1970. Oil had been discovered in commercial quantities in the interior of the country in 1964 and went into production in 1967. The first action of the new sultan was to orient the economy toward rapid economic growth and modernization.
