Abstract
A series of experiments was carried out with two streamlined foils at two different speeds in a towing tank. The ambient turbulence (nearly isotropic) was generated by means of a biplanar grid. The model-grid separation distance was varied systematically in order to subject the trailing vortices to varying degrees of turbulence. The data have been expressed in terms of a normalized turbulence parameter and the relative rise of the vortices. The results have shown that the ultimate height to which the vortices rise prior to their demise is
controlled by the two parameters cited, irrespective of the
shape and the aspect ratio of the lifting surfaces. A numerical
analysis has been initiated to analyze the motion of the
trailing vortices and the propagation of internal waves in
density stratified medium with the ultimate objective of incorporating
the effect of turbulence into the numerical model.
