Abstract
A postulated thermodynamic relation for elastic solids which equates the stress dependence of thermal expansion to the temperature dependence of reciprocal Young's modulus has been tentatively verified in earlier work by Rosenfield and Averbach (J. Ap. Phys., 27, 2 (195>6)). This thesis describes experiments which were intended to extend this verification, but which succeeded only in verifying quite closely the results obtained earlier for the temperature dependence of the reciprocal Young's modulus. Experimental techniques utilizing a high temperature Tuckerman optical strain gage instead of the wire resistance strain gages employed by the earlier authors are described, and the difficulties encountered in their use are discussed.
