The use of differentially deflected fairwater planes to control submarine rolling is studied. Because of coupling between pitch and roll angles, the snap roll that occurs in a high speed hard turn affects the stability of a submarine not only in the horizontal plane but also in the vertical plane. Direct roll control was achieved by making use of the fairwater planes in a differentially deflected mode such that they could give counter moment to reduce the snap roll. A roll controller was designed as a position and velocity feedback controller. Controlled roll angle improved the depth and pitch stability of submarine.en_US
