Abstract
Recruiting duty is considered to be one of the most challenging billets within the Marine Corps, and Marines will endure great personal hardship to succeed in accomplishing their mission. A subset of this mission is to recruit applicants for the Marine Corps field bands via the Musician Enlistment Option Program (MEOP). This portion of the recruiting mission is considered one of the most difficult to accomplish. It is also the only mission within Marine Corps enlisted recruiting that requires an exclusively tested skill prior to enlisting. Understanding the demographics of this population is key to the Marine Corps effectively targeting its manpower and advertising resources to recruit well-qualified individuals to serve as Marine musicians. Utilizing data management and software analysis techniques, this study examines those previously recruited via the MEOP by mining historical data obtained from the Marine Corps Recruiting Information Support System (MCRISS). It quantitatively describes the population and identifies significant demographic shifts. After identifying statistically relevant changes, this study provides recommendations on how to improve the MEOP recruiting process for greater effectiveness and efficiency. This study’s approach and methodology may be applied to future populations of interest with pre-existing special knowledge, skills, and abilities.
