dc.description.abstractThe US Navy is quickly reaching the point at which its current, hardware-centric approach to warfare will become inadequate. Even today, legacy combat systems are unable to handle the torrential flows of knowledge and information required for combat efficacy, and even worse, the current manner in which such systems are specified, designed, integrated and tested fails to address the kinds of flexible, composable, systems of systems that will be so critical for combat as future systems become operational. The research described in this report examines how network-centric models and methods can be integrated with knowledge-centric models and methods to develop more appropriate approaches to combat system specification, design, integration and testing. This helps to establish a powerful, unprecedented capability, the use and utility of which we illustrate through application to a challenging maritime scenario centered on carrier strike group operations at sea.en_US
