Abstract
The relation of the total structure weight of a two-dimensional ring frame to the stress distribution in each of the elements is investigated. The total weight of the two-dimensional structures investigated were a minimum when design stresses had been attained in all elements of the structure. An expression is developed that approximates the change in stress distribution in a member when additions or deletions of materia1 are made in the member itself and its associated members. This expression is used as the basis for a rational design technique that converges to a ring frame of minimum total weight.
