Abstract
The time-dependent force acting on a cylinder under going harmonic in-line oscillations in an otherwise steady flow was measured for various amplitudes and frequencies of oscillation and mean flow velocity. The experiments were carried out in a recirculating water tunnel operating as an open channel with a free surface at the test section. The time-dependent force has been expressed in terms of a mean drag coefficient C(d) and the Fourier-averaged drag and inertia coefficients C(d) and C(m) as functions of the relative amplitude A/D and the frequency parameter D/VT.
