Abstract
Vice Admiral Ron Route, a 1976 operations research alumnus, returned to the NPS
campus recently. In the nearly 30 years since he completed his master’s degree he has
commanded a destroyer, guided missile cruiser, cruiser destroyer group, carrier battle
group, and served as the 50th president of the Naval War College. Now the Navy’s
inspector general, Vice Adm. Route wanted NPS students to have an understanding of
the IG program. He also wanted an open dialogue about graduate education. His key
point: though his subsequent Navy assignments placed him in only two “p-coded
billets,” the Navy’s term for specific positions requiring his educational specialty, he has
used his NPS education every day of his professional career. It was very moving to hear
a leader who has been dedicated to the naval profession extend such credit to this
institution.
