Abstract
The goal of this research effort was twofold: to inform the design and implementation of USMC initiatives, like Project Tripoli, so that obstacles to technology adoption are successfully overcome and to indicate the mechanisms that could be used to accelerate the adoption of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies. A mixed-methods approach was used to operationalize the diffusion of innovation model (DOIM) for its use in the USMC and introduce a level of detail directly applicable to its environment and personnel. The study examined scholarly research on the DOIM, technology adoption, design, and effectiveness of military VR/AR training solutions. The elements of DOIM were then mapped to the specifics of the USMC and its training domain. The study offers suggestions as to which USMC members would be best suited to take the roles of opinion leaders, change agents, and change agent’s aides. The results also include recommendations for adding performance feedback mechanisms consistent with well-established training procedures, collecting and analyzing performance data, and using communication channels to positively affect the adoption of VR and AR training solutions. Future research should examine the social system of the USMC and its interaction with the adoption of innovations to validate suggestions made in this thesis.
