Abstract
Nitrification of steel was first given serious attention about 1911, at Watertown Arsenal, where the hard white layer formed on the bore of guns after repeated firing, was observed and studied, (Reference No. 1) Prior to this, the iron-nitrogen diagram and the effect of nitrogen as an impurity in iron end steel had been investigated.
