Abstract
This thesis describes the analysis of publications for intelligence purposes using the method of content analysis and processing of the data collected. For this experiment, the Soviet naval journal Morskoy Sbornik was examined over a three-year period, 1970 to 1972. The data generated by this approach was then compared with key events to validate the methodology. For example, the influence of the 24th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union on the Soviet military was revealed using this technique. This particular type of content analysis used a thematic approach, using binary coding of topics, enabling large amounts of material to be surveyed in a relatively short period of time. Creation of a computer data base for analysis is described, and original source code of programs has been included. Recommendations for dissemination and use of such a data base to appropriate users are included.
