Abstract
June was the deadliest month for the U.S. military in Afghanistan since the invasion in October 2001.
July became the second straight month in which casualties exceeded those in Iraq, where four times as
many U.S. troops are on the ground. More Americans have been killed in Afghanistan since the
invasion began than in the first nine years of the Vietnam War, from 1956 to 1964.
