Abstract
Lumped-parameter and finite-element-models are developed
for the dynamic behavior of plane straight sided
frames. The models do not include axial and shear deformation,
but the equations of motion developed using the
models allow for time varying external loading. The performance
of these models is evaluated by a comparison with
a standard transfer matrix method for the special case of
free undamped vibration. The finite-element-model proves
to be much the better model. For the first five modes, the finite-element-model with 27 degrees of freedom differs
by no more than 0.4% from the "exact values" given by the
transfer matrix method. The lumped-parameter-model with
39 degrees of freedom gives errors roughly ten times as
great.
