Abstract
Measurement of plasma density and temperature was
attempted using the technique of scattering laser light
from the plasma and comparing the magnitudes of the scattered
and input intensities. Although no significant results
were obtained, a scattered signal was apparently obtained
using a giant pulse laser. Both PIN photodiodes and photomultiplier
tubes were used as detectors, and comparison
showed the photomultipliers were more suitable. The most
important results were modification of the laser to operate
with a Pockels cell in a "Q"-switched mode, improvement of
the optical alignment system, and use of a light trap to
eliminate internal reflected signals.
