Abstract
This thesis investigates the estimation of Lanchester
attrition- rate coefficients in a deterministic aggregated
combat model. Numerical values for the attrition-rate coefficients
in the Lanchester-type model are taken to be the
same as those for a corresponding continuous-time Markovchain
model, and maximum likelihood estimators are developed
for these Markov-chain coefficients. A discussion of the
historical background of Lanchester's equations preceeds the
theoretical development of components of the attrition rate
equations. Using the functional forms and procedures developed
by Gordon M. Clark in his doctoral thesis, a simple
computer simulation program is developed for a short duration
battle consisting of homogeneous forces. Recommendations
are made to modify this program to model heterogeneous
forces in a similar battle. A discussion of the theoretical
background supports these recommendations.
