Abstract
This thesis explores trends in far-right ideological beliefs and the potential risk of radicalization among U.S. first responders. Although research exists on radicalization, violent extremism, and United States military members and veterans, there are minimal data on this topic related to U.S. first responders. This thesis explores radicalization and violent extremism through a comprehensive analysis of published data and findings related to risk factors, motivations, definitions, events, and trends and also analyzes data collected via a national survey of U.S. fire and police organizations. This study integrates these analyses to develop a framework for understanding the radicalization process in first responders and supply recommendations on future research and counter-radicalization policy. The study concludes that there appears to be a growing proliferation of far- right ideological risk factors and motivations in our active military, veterans, and first responders ranks, which requires action by leadership and practitioners as this threat from within evolves.
