Abstract
This exploratory study applies a mixed method analysis of 132 (118 male/14 female) anonymously surveyed Unrestricted Line Commanding Officers (URLCO) aimed at determining what family networks are most prominent at the Operational Command level and what can be learned from URLCOs to better aid in the retention of pre-COs concerned with work life-balance. Out of all responses, family networks were categorized into seven bins, with the most prominent being “Males Married to Civilian Spouse with Children/Stepchildren” (69% of total responses, 80% of male responses). The most prominent female bin categorized was “Females Married to Military Spouse with Children/Stepchildren” (8% total responses, 57% of female responses). Through analysis of the qualitative data, two main themes were established. One theme was related to family, the other, to retention. The following aspects of a family network (family themes) were attributed to an URLCO’s success in their career: flexibility and communication, external support networks, strong spouse, spousal sacrifice and family choice, dual income, and commitment and service. URLCOs highlighted the following themes regarding retention of naval officers as recommendations for the Navy and policy makers to focus on as actions of concern for future generations: childcare, support for dual career families, facilities, geographic stability, operational tempo and promotion and pay.
