Challenges and limitations of sleep and performance data collected in operational environments: Implications for improving fatigue models

Abstract
Over the past 15 years at the Naval Postgraduate School, we have studied the work and rest patterns of Sailors and Marines in a variety of operational environments, primarily shipboard (Miller, Matsangas, & Kenney, 2012). Collecting data in the field presents a number of complications and potential confounds, however. It is impossible to control for many of the stresses and performance shaping functions that are present in the operational environment; and it is equally challenging to replicate these same operational conditions in the laboratory environment.
