Abstract
An experimental investigation of acoustic imaging in water is made at an ultrasonic frequency of U55 KHz. Using optical principles, the theory of image formation and resolution are discussed. The range capability of such a system is predicted by the use of underwater acoustic theory. The apparatus consists of a basic imaging system that provides a set of d.c. voltages, proportional to sound intensity at points in the image plane, to be applied to a visual display system. Such a display will present a two dimensional image of an insonified underwater target. This study differs from previous work done in underwater acoustic imaging, in that the image conversion process will lend itself to the application of integrated circuits.
