An experimental investigation of the internal ballistics of solid fuel ramjets was conducted in order to more adequately define the pertinent variables in combustor design. The experimental investigation included the effects of wall mass addition on the recirculation zone of a rearward facing step combustor design, various methods of combustor flame stabilization, and the effects of inlet turbulence on the internal ballistics of the combustor. Flow conditions within the recirculation zone were unaffected by varying rates of wall mass addition. Swirl devices and centerbodies were found to be inadequate substitutes for the rearward facing step inlet. The solid fuel ramjet combustor was found to be highly susceptible to inlet turbulence. Smooth inlet ducting 45 degrees off centerline provided nearly identical flame stabilization characteristics and regression rates as that of a previously designed axial inlet configuration.
