Abstract
U.S. Navy Sailors are constantly engaged in stressful and important work when they operate aboard ships around the world. The dynamic and busy nature of their work often impedes their ability to adopt and maintain healthy sleep habits. This study aimed to explore long term sleep patterns of surface warfare officers (SWOs) and inform Navy leadership about SWO sleep. This study analyzed the sleep of 104 SWOs as they progressed through a schoolhouse training environment into their subsequent fleet assignment. These SWOs were either department head or prospective commanding officer/executive officer students who were returning to fleet assignments in senior positions. Sleep was recorded from wearable Ōura rings which tracked sleep duration, heartrate, heartrate variability and sleep efficiency. Across both collection environments, Ōura data showed that SWOs were not getting sufficient sleep. Analysis of sleep data across the two collection environments showed a statistically significant decrease in sleep duration between the schoolhouse and fleet assignments. Future research should continue to investigate the sleep deficiencies in SWOs and explore how Sailor gender, rank, or platform may influence their ability to get healthy rest.
