Abstract
In the thesis, the use of Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) Theory to obtain the solution to the Helmholtz Equation governing the acoustic normal modes is examined. Specifically, uniformly valid WKB solutions for four classes of acoustic normal modes in the ocean are derived and the accuracy of the WKB approximation is tested against some exact solutions. It is found that this inherently high frequency technique has an appreciable accuracy even at a frequency of 1Hz. A product of this thesis is a computer program that solves for the WKB modes for arbitrary sound speed profile.
