Abstract
The pipeline for student naval aviators (SNA) is substantially backlogged in each of the training phases, leaving a large number of students waiting to start training, as well as a longer overall time for students to earn their wings. These issues occur in a highly constrained environment with an increasing demand for throughput and complex training requirements and standards. Researchers at the Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) are currently conducting studies to evaluate the training pipeline in order to alleviate the backlogs and produce qualified aviators at a faster rate. One such avenue being explored by CNATRA is the development of a simulation tool to model the flow of students through the pipeline. Senior leaders must be well informed about the dynamic relationship between the design of the pipeline and the efficiency of students through the training pipeline to meet the current and future needs of the Fleet. This thesis applies simulation analysis techniques to improve the insights that can be derived from the use of the training pipeline simulation model. The primary techniques performed include designed experiments and analysis of experiment output. Statistical meta-modeling techniques were used to capture main drivers, threshold points, and interactions between variables to better inform key leaders on sources of the training backlogs and areas of improvement in the pipeline.
