Abstract
The operations which might be performed by specialized
mission helicopters are identified and several hypothetical
mixes of these helicopters are developed and analyzed.
Actual flight hours performed in fiscal years 1974 through
1978 are used as a data base for the study.
The alternatives are analyzed in terms of total differential
costs of performing the same missions that were conducted
during the base period. Aspects such as the adding of additional
helicopters to stations without additional personnel,
dual qualification of personnel, shipboard operations of single-engine
helicopters, and the short-range recovery replacement
helicopter are also analyzed.
It is concluded that it would have been cost effective
to have operated specialized mission helicopters during the
base period. Projections of future helicopter activity
indicate that this advantage would continue into the future.
