Abstract
This study delves into Norwegian special operations forces (NORSOF) role in support of Norwegian defense strategies during large-scale combat operations (LSCO) in the High North. This thesis applies qualitative research, examining the role and type of special operations in LSCO through two case studies—a historical analysis of the 1982 Falklands War and a wargame specifically designed for NORSOF. Through these analyses, the study offers valuable insights into how NORSOF can serve as a crucial force multiplier in support of direct or indirect military strategies. Specifically, NORSOF must balance their contribution between two distinct sub-roles: shaping the operational environment and strategic raiding. In addition, a potential third but minor sub-role of rear area security falls between the two distinct ones. The findings provide NORSOF with a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities in LSCO in the High North.
