Abstract
If there is one word to describe fiscal year 2016, it would be foundational. To understand why this word is so meaningful for FY16, one must recall the past. The creation of ITACS as the centralized IT organization on campus was an evolution that took a period of many years. During that time, ITACS embraced and integrated disparate applications and systems around campus culminating in the establishment of the NPS EDU network in 2003. Even though establishing the EDU was a significant contribution to the NPS mission, there is more work to do. In order to provide an atmosphere of innovation and to establish the right IT environment to enable critical thinking, our organization must meet or exceed campus needs. In 2016 ITACS planned and prepared for the environment that will transform our campus and create the foundation for success now and in the future. To realize the transformative environment, a modern network was acquired, which was funded through the Navy Program Objective Memorandum (POM) process. This acquisition enabled the alignment of NPS’ networks with a next generation firewall that facilitates the ability to nimbly defend against the ever changing cyber threats. The network has also prepared NPS for a 100 Gigabit Internet connection that will provide for a solid foundation for education and research. With our continued commitment to improving the academic experience, we also established a service contract to create a wireless network around campus that could be upgraded and modified when necessary. At the same time as the wireless upgrade was occurring, we completed accreditation of two of our networks, without which we could not offer these networks to the campus. This accreditation provides the authority to operate through 2019. Additionally, we established cloud services with Amazon Web Services in which a dozen research projects operated without expending the resources required to buy and maintain additional equipment, quantifiable advantage for our faculty, researchers and students. A foundation rests soundly on how effectively one delivers a service. Customer service continues to be top of mind for ITACS both outside and inside the classroom. This year’s focus included upgrades to our classroom, web, and helpdesk technologies which have made a noticeable difference around campus . . . all done to support NPS’ academic and research mission. The foundation created will start to pay dividends immediately. I look forward to working with you in FY17 and all the possibilities that our foundational year will offer.
