Abstract
Twenty seven hours of acoustic data from the Point Sur SOSUS array were recorded and analyzed to determine the characteristics of diverse underwater acoustic sources. The SNR and variability of moored RAFOS sources at ranges of 150-1000 km were estimated, as was the source level of imploding incandescent light bulbs. The measured and modeled transmission loss from the bulbs were compared out to the first convergence zone. Finally, the distribution of whale calls in both time and azimuth was determined. These projects are meant to be illustrative of potential uses of Navy array data for both scientific research and graduate education.
