Abstract
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is one of the most reliable allies of the United States in the Middle East. Since civil war erupted in neighboring Syria in 2011, two major threats to Jordan’s national security and stability have emerged. The first relates to traditional security threats emanating from the rise of the Islamic State, and the second pertains to nontraditional security threats related to the large number of Syrian refugees in Jordan. This thesis seeks to highlight the traditional and nontraditional security threats confronting Jordan today and offers policy recommendations to alleviate both challenges. Through an in-depth analytical descriptive study, this thesis finds that the nontraditional security threats have been aggravated by the refugee crisis and have the greatest potential to unleash political instability in the near future. Economic and social tensions related to limited state resources and already overwhelmed public services require an international response to maintain the stability of Jordan’s political order. Jordan, allied countries, and international organizations need to consider specific policies and sufficient funding to aid Jordan’s education, healthcare, infrastructure, and housing sectors and promote economic development for a country with meager natural resources. Ultimately, ensuring positive stability in Jordan will help tamp down terrorism not only in the region but globally.
