Abstract
Christopher Alexander has pronosed a methodology for use in the general process of design. This paper investigates the application of this methodology, hierarchical decomposition, to the design of computer systems. A partial application of hierarchical decomposition to a real-world computer system, the Navy's Joint Uniform Military Pay System (JUMPS), is demonstrated. The paper concludes that while hierarchical decomposition has direct application to computer systems design, the practicality of the application appears limited to systems of rather small size.
