Abstract
From 1907 until 1942, Monterey's Hotel Del Monte housed one of the world's most influential art galleries. When the April 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire destroyed the Hopkins Institute of Art, a thriving community of artists became destitute. Through the vision of noted painters Charles Rollo Peters, William Keith, Arthur Mathews, Gottardo Piazzoni, Xavier Martinez, Eugen Neuhaus and Will Sparks, Hotel Del Monte renovated its ballroom and opened the Del Monte Art Gallery in 1907. An instant success, the gallery won acclaim throughout the art world and became the catalyst for several unexpected changes. "Up from the Ashes" captures the dramatic history of this gallery and its impact.
