dc.description.abstractAnalytical and experimental results are discussed for the composite patch to thin aerospace aluminum skin structure problem. Field level battle damage assessment and repair application concerns/limitations were integrated into the study. A discussion of battle damage assessment and available repair methodologies is presented along with a discussion of applicable finite element models and structural analysis predictions. Significant stress concentration reductions were realized (analytically and experimentally). The effectiveness of adhesively bonding a composite repair patch over small caliber ballistic damage to helicopter skin was demonstrated. Structural continuity was restored via a structural adhesive bridge into a precured, quasi-isotropic graphite/epoxy repair patch. Field level implementation of the SKABPATCH (Smith-Kolar Adhesively Bonded Patch) repair tactic is considered to be feasible from both an engineering perspective and for its logistical simplicity.en_US
