Abstract
In order for a user to authenticate themselves to a computer with a password, the computer must store some form of the user and rsquo;s password. Computer designers have developed a way of storing the password information in a one-way encrypted format that prevents attackers from taking the stored password information and decrypting it back into user password. The one-way encryption process if often called hashing. This tutorial describes in detail how passwords work and how they are compromised.
