Abstract
The ability to locate and determine the position of an ASW sonobuoy is essential part of airborne anti-submarine operations. Present methods restrict the parent aircraft's operational capability and yield only marginal data. State-of-the-art frequency control makes it possible to range sonobuoys accurately with radio signals. Sonobuoy position can then be determined by combining this range date with other available information. A system is proposed to both free the parent aircraft from present restrictions and to increase the accuracy of the position information.
