Abstract
This thesis builds a network representation of the U.S. financial system using data that is processed automatically from the U.S. Federal Reserve. We develop computational tools to import and clean the overall quarterly holding amounts in the financial accounts of the United States Z.1 report for the current and historical quarters. We use this curated data to create a network representation of the financial system and then to analyze the network to identify the most important monies and players based on rankings, analysis of network structure, and visualizations of different dimensions of the network. By studying this network structure, we obtain insight into potential vulnerabilities and changes in the financial system over time.
