Abstract
A multiplicative model based on the amplitude modulation equation is developed to predict the phenomonen of frequency translation effects of atmospheric scintillation on AM laser communications. An experiment to measure the effects of scintillation on atmospheric laser communications is designed and built . Preliminary results of the experiment are in general agreement with the predictive model. The best agreement is in predicting the scintillation components present in the AM frequency spectrum with some questions raised about the ability of the model to predict the bandwidth of the translated scintillation noise.
