dc.description.abstract | This thesis developed a robust electronic interface package for the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Middle Ultraviolet Spectrograph (MUSTANG) experiment. The MUSTANG instrument was designed to observe atmospheric emissions in the 1800A to 3400A wavelength region. MUSTANG has flown along with a Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) instrument on a NASA sounding rocket experiment, and is scheduled to fly on two more sounding rockets prior to integration on an Air Force satellite. Data from these experiments will test a new technique for measuring global ionospheric electron densities on a real-time basis. The electronic interface links the MUSTANG instrument with the Aydin Vector MMP-600 Series Pulse Code Modulation Encoder in the sounding rocket telemetry section. Analog data from MUSTANG is digitized and buffered in the electronic interface to support asynchronous transfer to telemetry. Digitized MUSTANG data is telemetered to a ground station during rocket flight. This electronic interface circuit was thoroughly tested during payload integration with NASA. Ground Support Equipment (GSE) was extensively revised to support the MUSTANG instrument during laboratory calibration and launch site testing. | en_US |
