Abstract
The development of CD-ROM(Compact Disc Read Only Memories) technology has produced significant ramifications for mass storage applications. The CD-ROM's read-only nature and its ability to store over 500 megabytes of data on a single disc will eventually revolutionize the historical and archival data base industries. The U.S. Navy is particularly interested in the space-saving and weight reduction capabilities of CD-ROM as compared to the current magnetic and paper media. Adaptability and feasibility are the primary issues to be faced when considering the integration of CD-ROM into U.S. Navy applications. This study addresses these issues and determines that CD-ROM will play a significant role in the Navy's efforts to create a paperless ship by 1990.
