dc.description.abstractUsing a serial short term memory task, subjects were required to respond to symbols presented one-back, 2-back, and 3-back from a randomly presented list of four different symbols while breathing either 100 percent oxygen or atmospheric air with an oxygen mask. The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether breathing 100 percent oxygen had an effect on short term memory. Analysis of the data collected from 36 subjects showed that breathing pure oxygen had no effect on the subjects' short term memory ability over a 12 minute period. This result is in direct contrast to previously reported results.
