A method of coding an ensemble of messages of a finite number of symbols is developed. Minimizing the average number of coding digits per message by using Huffman coding can result in a large variance. This is a problem because a large variance requires a large buffer and also creates more time delay during transmission and decoding respectively for on-line communication. This research examines modified Huffman codes for the purpose of finding a way to reduce the variance. The effective parameters which give the lower variance modified Huffman codes are obtained. The buffer requirements and the reduction of the bandwidth to forward messages in an on-line communication is investigated. A possible design for a practical system is presented for using the modified Huffman codes.en_US
