Description
NPS's ongoing research in HFNs for Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief (HA/DR), particularly their work for the Souhteast Asian tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, is being leveraged by OASD-NII as a model for using inexpensive, commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS), integrated wireless technologies to rapidly provide basic, urgently needed communications to disaster zones -- both domestic and international. In this presentation Brian Steckler introduces the HFN puzzle as a model representing and describing the different components and issues that must be addressed by emergency responders who will be setting up hastily formed networks in both natural and man-made disasters.
