Abstract
This report compares the principal characteristics of contracting against the structure of science which includes four critical criteria: (1) a distinct subject matter, (2) a description and classification of the subject matter, (3) the presumption oi underlying uniformities and regularities concerning the subject matter, and (4) the adoption of the scientific method for studying the subject matter. The report concludes that contracting meets, to varying degrees, the four criteria and is, in fact, evolving toward a mature science. The reader should take particular note of the examination of the contracting body of knowledge, proposed contracting taxonomies, contracting principles which were surfaced through interviews, and the manner in which behavioral sciences apply the scientific method. The report also discusses the purpose of a contracting science, the trademarks of science, and the importance of contracting research.
