Abstract
The FY23 NRP research, conducted in conjunction with MCSC, analyzed and refined the land domain ontology, and conceptual data model (CDM), developed in the FY22 NRP research entitled, “Developing a Model-Based Systems Engineering Land Domain Construct for Marine Corps Systems Command,” with three efforts. The first effort is to analyze how the land domain ontology and CDM may be implemented to components that interface with land domain. This effort validated the FY22 NRP ontology, and CDM, as mathematically correct by modeling it in the Protégé-OWL ontology tool. This validation illustrated the ontology’s utility to serve as the structure for an authoritative source of truth. The achievement of this goal also supports the development of the MCSC Entity Re-use Library (the first known authoritative source of truth in DoD) by using the previously developed ontology as the library’s structure. The second focus of this research explores options to exchange data through the representation of complex data and the relationships between the data. This research effort explored how various diagram types are implemented in various modeling languages and MBSE tools and demonstrates how data can be shared between each. A key feature of the Entity Re-Use Library is data sharing among disparate tools. This research explored a new approach to data sharing by defining a set of features common to the three tools that were considered. The third effort focuses on evaluating and updating the existing ontology and CDM with corresponding land domain and the Naval Operational Architecture from a mission scenario perspective. This effort illustrates how the ontology and CDM can be applied to the structuring of a relational database being developed by one of the Naval Surface Warfare Centers. This goal is illustrated that the ontology can be applied to more than MBSE Tool derived data but is applicable to other data sources.
