Abstract
An investigation was made of the buckling of rectangular plates with free, simply supported, or clamped edges and loaded in uniform compression or pure shear. The finite element method with a rectangular, sixteen-degree-of -freedom element was used. Results show that, for the same order of error, this element allows much coarser plate divisions than a widely used twelve-degree-of-freedom element. An order of magnitude reduction in the required order of the assembled stiffness and stability coefficient matrices results.
