Abstract
The purpose of this report was to analyze the various methods used by state transportation agencies for determining contract time. The analysis consisted of a discussion of the various considerations and ramifications of highway construction contract time determination, and an examination of the various procedures followed by state agencies across the country in determining contract durations with the use of survey information received. For the purpose of this report, contract time was considered to by synonymous with contract duration. Evaluation of survey responses revealed that for the majority of cases, there are four basis for which contract time is determined: construction season limits, quantity or production rates, work-flow techniques, and estimated costs. Most commonly it was found that a combination of two or more of these are used to determine contract durations. These findings were in close agreement with those discussed in Transportation Research Board Special Report 79, Contract Time Determination. (sdw)
