Abstract
Tanzania has emerged as a regional hub of security and peace by avoiding major terrorist attacks in the last decade. Unfortunately, this cannot be said about many of its neighbors, including Kenya and Mozambique. This thesis examines how Tanzania has avoided the terrorism trap since 2012. Specifically, it analyzes the effectiveness of Tanzania’s defense and security forces, enabling the country to avoid terrorism despite significant risk factors for terrorism generated by grievances and opportunities inside Tanzania. This case study highlights national cohesion, civil-military cooperation, community engagement, and abstention from military intervention in neighboring countries as the key components of security and defense forces’ effectiveness that has enabled Tanzania to avoid the terrorism trap. However, Tanzania is still vulnerable to terrorism due to its anocratic political system and the rapid development of technology. Tanzania should consolidate its democracy and strengthen its security and defense forces by strategically allocating sufficient funds to maintain its stability and security, thus offering hope for a continued safe future in the region
