Abstract
This thesis investigates the connection between Chinese domestic commercial film and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) legitimacy. The CCP has always required culture to promote party legitimacy. Since the time of Mao Zedong, art and artists have been considered mouthpieces for the party. State policies under Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping both promote domestic film production and ensure commercial films support party narratives. By investigating domestic blockbusters produced during the Hu and Xi eras, this thesis found that the CCP promotes major economic and nationalist narratives in commercial film that reinforce the party’s message. Commercial blockbusters produced and released in China between 2002 and 2023 have proven a profitable tool for promoting party legitimacy.
