The unsatisfactory performance of collector and commutator brushes
in motor generators aboard nuclear submarines is introduced with the
hypothesis that these difficulties are the result of atmospheric
contamination. Following a survey of previously encountered contamination
problems the experimental apparatus and procedures used to test
this theory are described. Results of operation in eight simulated
submarine environments are provided.
